de Baguer Wines

The Dobrovo castle’s wine cellar is historically highly significant as it has been an essential part of this Renaissance castle ever since its construction in the 17th century. The cellar was designed and set up by the first owners of this medieval manor, the noble family Colloredo-Mels.

Silverio de Baguer, a count of Catalan origin, moved to Brda after marrying Cecilia Catterini-Erzberg, the only heir of a noble family from Gorizia and the owner of the Dobrovo castle. He significantly influenced the development of viticulture and winemaking in Brda. In 1880, he planted his first vineyard, which laid grounds to today’s viticulture as it set an example for many winegrowers in the Brda region. He cultivated 315 hectares of vineyards, producing an average of 1,200 hectoliters of wine a year.

In 2019, Klet Brda Winery completed the renovation of the de Baguer historical cellar, restoring its original role. The cellar is now home to the wines de Baguer, Single Vineyard, and A plus, aged in wooden barrels, and classical sparkling wines Virgo.

Production method

The grapes grown in Brda’s best sites by our diligent wine-growing families are later processed in the cellar with tested and innovative wine-producing methods. Great wines are born of knowledge, talent, and intuition of our team of oenologists, led by the Klet Brda Winery’s head oenologist, who is responsible for premium and consistent quality of de Baguer, Single vineyard, and A plus wines as well as Virgo sparkling wines.

In the cellar, the grapes are first destemmed and crushed, then cooled and left to macerate. The following steps include pressing, fermentation, and maturation in wooden barrels and stainless-steel tanks. The time in which wine is in contact with wood needs to be carefully determine based on variety and desired style. Our oenologist determines the optimal duration of maturation in wooden barrels for each variety and vintage individually.

When the wine reaches perfect harmony, it is bottled and left to settle for a few months, before being placed on the market.

Mature, structurally rich, and highly sophisticated, wines from the de Baguer cellar are appreciated by experts at international competitions as well as wine connoisseurs. We produce only the best vintages and in limited series.

Characteristics

Integrating tradition and advanced knowledge for uncompromising excellence.

Great wines are the result of carefully selected growing sites, respect for tradition, passion, and clear vision. When it comes to de Baguer, Single vineyard, and A plus wines, only the best grapes are good enough. To produce grapes of the highest quality, we rely on years of experience in cherry-picking the most suitable vineyards, aged between 25 and 65 years.
