This year’s season has been like no other.

We were expecting an early harvest and low quantities of grapes. However, despite extreme weather conditions, the harvest was almost normal in quantity. Even with the unprecedented drought, we will only suffer a 15% crop loss. Our sustainably cultivated vineyards situated on the right sites have better endured the drought and consequently suffered less losses and produced grapes of higher quality. The harvest of 2022 promises red wines of high quality.

Harvest 2022

In the extreme weather conditions, such as seen this year, we can truly appreciate the importance of sustainable production, which is one of the guiding principles at Klet Brda. We start by selecting adequate vineyard sites, thoroughly preparing the soil by adding sufficient organic substances, and choosing the right bases and clones. This is followed by daily cultivation of vineyards in harmony with nature. In response to climate changes, Klet Brda annually organizes a series of winter lectures for its members. During these lectures, they work with experts to implement necessary changes in winegrowing practices, which are summarised in Klet Brda’s sustainable production policy, applicable to all members of the cooperative. Following these guidelines for cultivation of vineyards has contributed to this year’s crop loss being lower than expected.
This year, Klet Brda and its partners in sustainable production made another important step, as they started working on a pilot project for monitoring pests in vineyards with the aim of reducing the use of plant protection products.

QUANTITY AND QUALITY

This year, the winegrowing families of Klet Brda will in total produce 6,300 tons of grapes, which is 15% less than the expected annual crop of 7,500 tons. More affected were the exposed sites on top of the hills, where the loss of crop will amount to 30%, while the loses on the lower sites will not be as severe. The harvest of 2022 promises red wines of high quality.

This year’s summer was dry and hot. At the beginning of the harvest, which took place earlier, this year, the agronomists made concerning predictions about crop quantity due to the long drought we had experienced. Because we carefully monitor parameters in all our vineyards, we waited for the grapes to be adequately ripe. This together with the rain in September and our compliance with the principles of sustainable production in the vineyards has somewhat mitigated the consequences of this year’s long drought.

HARVEST AND PRICES

HARVEST

At Klet Brda, we started this year’s harvest for base wines for sparkling wines on 18th August 2022, while regular harvest started on 26th August 2022 and will end next week, when we will harvest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Following a hot and dry summer, harvest in Brda started earlier this year. Unlike usually, when regular harvest takes place in the beginning of September, we started regular harvest in the last week of August.

PRICES

This year, buying-in prices of grapes will be higher by a quarter. The pricelist includes several changes. The buying-in prices were increased by 25% and the difference between average and premium quality has increased as well.

The average buying-in price for a kilogram of grapes will amount to approximately EUR 0.70 for our standard program and EUR 0.95 for our premium program. Prices for a kilogram of grapes will range between EUR 0.40 and EUR 1.35. Grapes from the best sites, which reflect not only general parameters, but special vineyard characteristics as well, will have a price of EUR 2.00 or higher.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION: Smart solutions in vineyards

Klet Brda has collaborated with selected winegrowers and partners as well as companies Telekom Slovenia and EFOS to introduce a pilot project for remote monitoring of pests in vineyards. In the framework of this project, we are testing a solution, which would enable winegrowers to remotely monitor the status of pests in their vineyards and receive a prediction of their movement 14 days in advance. This would allow them to take timely precautions and protect their vineyards before any damage occurred. Winegrowers could optimise the use of pesticides and only spray their vineyards where and when the pests are present. This would contribute to a significant reduction in use of plant protection products and a more sustainable production. You can learn more about this project in the enclosed material.

HARVEST

Due to hot and dry weather, harvest in Brda will start earlier this year.

Usually, regular harvest would start in the beginning of September, this year, however, it will begin in the last week of August. This was caused by extreme weather conditions, which manifested in dry spring followed by dry and hot summer. Although vine is relatively resistant to drought, these extreme conditions have affected it, nonetheless.
In such extreme circumstances, we can truly see the significance of sustainable production and adequate allocation of vineyards. Sustainably cultivated and properly tended vineyards situated on right sites, where soil was prepared with an adequate amount of organic matter, have better withstood this year’s drought, and will suffer less loss and provide grapes of better quality.
We are faced with a harvest like no other before. We expect that this year’s vintage will be significantly smaller in quantity. The family vineyards of Klet Brda will bring in 4,000 tons of grapes, which is over half of the normal annual amount. The quality of the 2022 vintage looks promising, however, the weather during the harvest may still affect it. This year’s buying in prices will be higher by a quarter.

We stared harvesting grapes for base wines of sparkling wines of Pinot Noir on 18th August 2022 and then moved on to Chardonnay for sparkling wines. Our regular harvest is to start on 25th August. At Klet Brda, most of the harvest is expected to conclude by the end of September, however, late varieties and some other specialities will stay in the vineyards until the beginning of October. Although we are usually happy to have a dry fall in the vineyards, this year, some rain would be greatly appreciated, as it could still help late varieties recover.
At Klet Brda, we are convinced that visits from business partners are one of the most important marketing leverages that an export oriented Slovenian company can have, as the reality of winegrowers from Brda, who cultivate their vineyards on steep slopes, is inconceivable for many foreigners. It is only after they experience our harvest first hand and feel the pulse of the locals, that they can truly appreciate our wines. With that insight, they can present and sell our wines in their countries even more successfully.
From 2nd to 6th September, we will host a group of distributors from the United States and after that exporters from Poland, Serbia, and Italy. In October, we are expecting a visit from a group of buyers from Great Britain. In fact, we have especially high expectations for the later visit since Great Britain has proved to be one of the fastest growing markets in the recent years.

The results are in for the 48th National Wine Competition Vino Slovenija, which took place in Gornja Radgona Slovenia.

With 2 champion titles, 5 gold medals, and 15 silver medals, Klet Brda has reaffirmed the consistent quality of its wines. Excelling at this year’s competition, was Cabernet Sauvignon Bagueri 2018 which was awarded the highest title of Champion. Among the wines with the highest scores are also Chardonnay Bagueri 2018 and Rebula Bagueri 2019, recipients of gold medals asserting the premium quality of the Baqueri line, which year after year excels at domestic and international wine competitions, receiving the most medals.

Cabernet Sauvignon Bagueri 2018 impressed the evaluators in Gornja Radgona with its deep ruby red colour with purple hues, distinct aroma of blackcurrant, plum jam, cocoa, and chocolate, and a velvety full-bodied taste with sweet tanins, which combined with  the aroma of vanilla create an extremely harmonious and complex wine. Grapes for Cabernet Sauvignon Bagueri 2018 were picked manually in terraced vineyards with SW and SE position. Fermentation took place in French barriques barrels. The wine then matured  in French barriques barrels for at least 24 months.

Pinot Grigio Ramato is perfect for wine lovers who expect more from their Pinot Grigio.

This wine is produced with a special method, which gives it its unique copper colour, called by Friulian locals “ramato” (rame is Italian for copper). Ramato refers to the production method unique to the Pinot Grigio variety, which was developed in the middle of the 19th century, in Italy. Produced in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region for over centuries, this variety has, as one of the first international varieties, found its second home in Brda.

Pinot Grigio is a white variety, which derives from Pinot Noir, but differs from it with its unique greyish pink skin. After being pressed at the winery, grapes are left in contact with skins for 2 days. This maceration gives the wine its tactile texture, richer and fuller taste, and coppery hues. Because of its specific structure, this wine can be paired with different dishes, such as prosciutto, seafood, white meat, and Asian food.

The 2018 Ribolla Bagueri Superior  by Klet Brda won the gold medal at the prestigious British Decanter World Wine Awards competition.

Sustainable cultivation in selected microlocationsThe grapes for the 2018 Ribolla Bagueri Superior were grown in four selected vineyards in Neblo, Višnjevik, Medana and Cerovo which best suit this variety–i.e. located on the sunlit tops of the hills. The grapevines thrive in the typical marly soil of Brda, which is reflected in the wine’s pronounced mineral touch. These vineyards are ideally aged between 15 and 30 years, covered with grass, provided with proper nutrition and cultivated according to sustainable methods.

Sophisticated work in the cellar: The Ribolla Bagueri Superior fermented, and matured for the first six months, in selected French barrique barrels. Then it was left to mature in huge elliptical Slavonian oak barrels, the specific shape of which, together with the characteristics of the oak wood, enables the wines to best express the Brda terroir. The process of battônage (the periodic stirring of the lees during wine maturation) emphasises the creamy texture and the intensity of the flavour, while malolactic fermentation provides for the desired softness and a pleasant buttery flavour.

The road to the medal  The DWWA judges are internationally renowned experts. The wines entered into the competition are divided in several categories, primarily based on the region of origin, and assessed individually. The judges are informed of the region, style and price rage of the wines, but they are not made aware of their trademarks. The best-rated wines within each category, rated under an acknowledged 100-point system, win medals.

Coming back after a two-year break, this year’s Heroes of the Vineyards cycling marathon took place on Saturday, 4th June 2022. By organising this event, Klet Brda helps to promote Brda and the Cherry Festival among cycling enthusiasts and other visitors. Like in the previous years, the participants of this year’s marathon cycled to Brda for a good cause, as part of the money from the entry fees will be dedicated to rehabilitation of individuals who suffer from late onset of blindness or visual impairment on a personal level, which is carried out by the intermunicipal association of the blind and visually impaired of Nova Gorica.

The 108 km long recreational marathon started at 8:30 am in Ljubljana and continued through Vrhnika, Logatec, and over Črni vrh. After a stop in Ajdovščina, at Fructal, the cyclists continued their ride towards Nova Gorica and over Sabotin to Brda, crossing the finish line at the organiser’s headquarters in Dobrovo at 13:30 pm.

This year, 765 cyclists from all over Slovenia attended the marathon. At the finish line, Klet Brda awards special prizes to the oldest and the youngest participant, as well as to the largest family or club attending the marathon. The largest club this year was the Omega Air cycling club, followed by the Brda cycling club, the Mahle cycling club, and Meblo Jogi cycling club.

Merlot Bagueri Superior 2017 from the Klet Brda wins a grand gold medal at the prestigious Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in Belgium.

Grapes for merlot Bagueri Superior 2017 were grown in selected vineyards of optimal age (between 10 and 25 years), which are grassed, properly nourished and processed according to the methods of sustainable production.

The vines grow in typical Brda soil “opoka”, which is reflected in the wine with a pronounced mineral note. The wine fermented in selected French barrique barrels, where it also matured 24 months before it was bottled.

Our sparkling wine Bagueri rosé, produced by the traditional method, won a silver medal at the International Rose Championship. Rejoice with us, let the bubbles fill up our lives.
